Good results for SOCOSURF TCS / SOCOSURF PACS as alternative to chrome(VI)

REACh will ban chromium VI, the sunset date approaches.

ISQ, contracted by ESA (European Space Agency), conducted a comparative study to evaluate alternatives for Hexavalent Chromate Conversion Coatings. 

The aim of the study was to evaluate solutions, including SOCOSURF TCS / SOCOSURF PACS, SURTEC 650V and BONDERITE M-NT 65000, as a stand-alone protection on different aluminium alloy substrate (2024 T3, 2024 T81, 7075 T73, 6061 T6, 5083 H111).

BONDERITE M-CR 1200 (Alodine 1200) was used as the baseline in all tests.

SOCOSURF TCS / SOCOSURF PACS ranked as Nº1 of TCP solution for conversion on SST performances by an independent study.

  • The phase 1 of the evaluation concluded that SOCOSURF TCS / SOCOSURF PACS has been one of “the most promising chemical conversion alternatives for all the aluminium alloys, including AA2024.”
  • The extended testing (Phase 2), confirmed SOCOSURF TCS / SOCOSURF PACS was the only alternative to BONDERITE M-CR 1200 that passed 336 hrs Neutral Salt Spray with less than 5 pits on all alloys.
  • Additional testing were done (Resistivity Checks MIL DTL 81706, Humidity Testing ASTM D2247, Thermal Cycling). SOCOSURF TCS / SOCOSURF PACS was selected for the last phase of the evaluation for “Long Term Environmental Test Programme”. It was selected as a stand alone protection and with Primers/Topcoat.

SOCOSURF TCS and SOCOSURF PACS are an alternative process to Chromium VI for conversion treatments and for sealing after anodizing. On aluminium alloys, the corrosion protection provided is comparable to that of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)).
