The Coatings Development Chemist will have ample opportunities to demonstrate leadership and innovation while providing support to a wide variety of stakeholders including the management, manufacturing, quality, and commercial teams and external customers. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Product and/or process development and improvements.
  • Performing necessary physical, chemical, and analytical property testing.
  • Managing projects to help customers successfully implement the use of Socomore products.
  • Working with the commercial team on new product development and launches.
  • Supporting industrialization of coatings for manufacturing in Texas or partner locations.
  • Coordinating with third party laboratories and partners.

The incumbent will routinely be tasked to identify the root cause of product field performance problems or to assist new customers with the use of Socomore products. Periodic travel to customer sites as needed to support the global goals of the business is expected, typically no more than 20%.

Key Responsibilities

  • Designs test protocols as required to ensure that newly developed products or current products will meet customer needs and where necessary meet the requirements of appropriate ASTM, ISO, or customer specifications.
  • Maintains laboratory instruments and troubleshoots malfunctions when needed, including coordination with other departments to maintain certification of equipment used for testing.
  • Confers with scientists or engineers to conduct analyses of research projects, interprets test results, and develops nonstandard tests.
  • Directs, coordinates, or advises personnel in test procedures for analyzing components or physical properties of raw materials as required to qualify alternate source raw materials.
  • Authors technical papers, reports, and other documents needed to support sales, marketing, project, and customer training efforts.
  • Compiles and analyzes information to assist in the determination of the appropriate scale-up of manufacturing processes and equipment required to optimize manufacturing efficiency.
  • Evaluates laboratory safety procedures to ensure compliance with standards or to make improvements as needed.
  • Coordinates the purchase of necessary laboratory materials, such as chemicals.
  • Updates and/or creates FMEA’s on critical products identified by the commercial team.
  • Performs laboratory analyses on a wide range of products and materials.
  • Takes full ownership of assigned projects.
  • Performs experiments to characterize the chemical and physical properties of materials.
  • Conducts experiments to improve upon or to duplicate various materials and substances.
  • Interprets requests, specifications, and performance and compliance issues and applies them to lab work assignments in a complete and accurate manner.
  • Engages in research to develop new methods of processing or production.
  • Analyzes findings and compiles reports regarding procedures and results.
  • Communicates project progress to process and work owners.
  • Recommends measures to improve product development methods, product support, and quality of product.
  • Maintains accurate and complete lab workbook, formula, and lab worksheet records.
  • Enters accurate and complete formula information into the computer system as required by company policies.
  • Maintains the assigned work area(s) in a clean, orderly, and safe manner.
  • Confers with supervisor to coordinate activities of the department.

Qualifications & Education

  • Qualifications Minimum:
  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) from a four-year college or university in Chemistry, Polymer Science, Material Science or a related discipline and two semesters of general and organic Chemistry each.
  • Knowledge & Experience:
  • PhD
  • OR Master’s Degree and 4+ years of relevant experience
  • OR Bachelor’s Degree and 8+ years of relevant experience
  • Strongly Preferred:
  • Coatings development, testing, manufacturing and/or application experience.
